King of Catering Award
Just turned on the TV on Saturday night, and came across ‘King of Catering Award’ show on TVB HD channel. It’s an awards night, in the form of Academy Awards etc, but it’s about awarding restaurants in different categories. I only started watching half way of 2h show, but I’ve seen category winners of Sushi, [...]

糖醋青瓜荷包蛋 = sweet & sour cucumber with fried eggs? something like that.
May sound weird to Westerners (& to some extent, Japanese), but as Chinese people traditionally don’t really eat vegetables raw, cooked cucumber is perfectly fine & quite delicious. I like just cooking it with sesame oil, ginger & soy, but this one combines fried [...]

Twitchie!
No, I’m not talking about myself! but there’s this thing I saw on TV (no I don’t watch TV all the time either!!!). It was on a BS1 channel (Japanese) show called ‘New York Waves’ introducing different subcultures among youths in NY.
This guy, Rapheal is a leader of ‘Tech Craft’ movement in NY – they [...]

BS debate (Japanese TV)
Just turned on BS1 (one of sub-channels of NHK, a Japanese TV channel) expecting to watch a light-hearted traveling show called ‘Out & About’, but ended up watching a debate show involving 3 young politicians from the Japanese Democratic (Minshutoh 民主党) party, which of course is the new political party which won a landslide victory [...]

It a TV show on aTV on Sunday at 6:25pm. I do often miss it as we’re out on Sunday afternoon, but you can watch missed episodes on their website (http://www.jptime.tv/ an ancient website which sometimes has issues with my browsers, but it’ll get there in the end). It’s the first (& only) HK locally [...]

This would not make sense to people other than in Japan or HK/Chinese speaking cultures, but the author of the cartoon クレヨンしんちゃん (in Japan) & 蠟筆小新 (in HK/China) passed away recently from a fall while hiking in a mountain after being missing for a week or so. It shocked the nation. My thoughts are with [...]

Chinese saying
‘Sweets signify sweet life in Chinese’
I just heard that on TV (Dolce Vita on Pearl) – showing some wonderful sweets for the mid autumn festival – not just mooncakes, but this great deep-fried puff pastry made to look like peonies & candied walnuts (yum!)
On the topic of mooncakes, I think mooncakes in this blog below [...]

Beautiful Cooking (TV Show)
Beautiful Cooking is a popular TV Show in HK shown on Sunday night. I started watching it when it first aired & been quite constantly viewing is since (now it’s season 2). The format is like ‘Iron chef’ in a sense, but instead of ‘Culinary legends’ & professional chefs, there are 3 girls, some [...]

There are lot’s of fresh squid at wet market & they’re quite cheap. They’re also great diet food. Must try this one! I might add red capsicums which may be nice.
(hum-san-tsoi char ??? yu/ stir-fried squid with salty sour pickled vegetable)
I made this last night – [...]

水豆腐 (literally ‘water tofu’ – savoury tofu dish with mince & mushrooms)
This looked so yummy & healthy on TV. Must try with toufuhua (soft tofu sold from a big bucket) from the snack shop around the corner. Sort of like soup, or non-spicy version of mapo tofu?
This is the closest image I could find… not [...]
